More News

Well, I am starting to feel rested up from my very first trip to the great states of Washington and Oregon. I have bought my tickets and will be heading back again from July 12 - July 25.

I have now confirmed my tickets for two additional things I have wanted to photograph since I have owned digital cameras. They are the Grand Canyon and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. My wife and youngest daughter will be traveling with me in October to have a bit of vacation seeing these places and events. We will also visit the Petrified Forest and Painted Deserts which also have beautiful landscapes.

That's just a bit of the photographic road ahead but as for the more immediate future, there will be two more weeks in Washington & Oregon, then on to Northern California and Northern Nevada.

Thanks for all your encouragement and kind words. I hope many of you are getting your cameras out to try some new ideas perhaps gleaned from something you might see here. If you keep on shooting ... you will score hits. I know it. I am living proof.

All the best to you.

A few other great places you should add to your list for some absolutely fantastic scenery: Bryce Canyon in Utah...especially the walk down into the Hoodoos. Zion and Arches NP, as well as Canyonlands...the upper part of Grand Canyon. However, the best view of Canyonlands is driving down into it and, of course, looking UP at it's beauty! ~~Annie

Steve,
Thank you very much for signing up as a follower of my blog, which enabled me to find your profile and your blog, which I as fascinated to scroll through. My wife (Julie, who does Scottsdale, Arizona Daily Photo) now wants to buy the tripod that you showed in one of your photos a couple of weeks ago.

You will love your trip to the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. Allow me to make a couple of other suggestions, however. Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "shay") is a spectacular spot for photography. Some people prefer it to the Grand Canyon. It is a much narrower canyon with sheer deep pink sandstone cliffs and hundreds of cliff dwellings. Be sure to take the tours up the canyon operated by the Navajo Nation. You will also want to go along the rim on both forks of the canyon.

Monument Valley is not far north of there. The Hopi Mesas are also nearby.

At the Grand Canyon, if you plan to walk into the canyon, I recommend taking the South Kaibab Trail rather than the Bright Angel Trail. The South Kaibab trail follows a ridge line so you have great views in all directions and can walk out far in towards the center of the canyon without dropping as much in elevation.

The Bright Angel Trail, which many more people take because it leaves from Grand Canyon Village, drops down into a side canyon, so you have a severe elevation difference without seeing nearly as much.

There is no water on the South Kaibab Trail, however, so you have to pack in what you need to drink.

I've been to the Grand Canyon 3 times and am never amazed at its beauty. Three years ago, I hiked down and stayed overnight discovering amazing waterfalls and blue/green water.

I'm looking forward to seeing your pics from there and the balloon festival. Your work is amazing.

I have not commented much but I have seen some beautiful pictures. Your work is truly amazing. My son loves to do what you do but is tied down to a job but his grandkids do a great fill in as far as he is concerned. I am not a traveler but since it is something you love I am glad you are. Thank you for the great pictures,

I'm glad you liked the Pacific Northwest. I've lived in Oregon for the past 25 years and despite hating the rain, I love it here! When you return in July, be sure to head to Silverton, Oregon and photograph the gorgeous Silver Creek Falls. Crater Lake is awesome too, as well as Sisters. Some amazing mountains over there. Enjoy!

I have family in AZ. and loved traveling through New Mexico as well. My biggest problem when I get into these areas driving is I have a hard time keeping my eyes on the road ahead of me-lol. I'm looking forward to your pictures you take in that area as I can enjoy the view without the worry of running off the road :D
