becky, i was using a zoom. however, it's 80-400 and i was backed out quite a bit because i actually flanked this elk cow with my car. there was a large group crossing the road and this gal was dragging her feet a bit. she decided to wait for me to pass but i wasn't intending to pass but rather flank her for in close shots. i am seated in my car 8-10 feet from her face ... so i didn't zoom too far in. so ... i only risked having her get mad and kicking the car door in but that didn't bother me at all. it's a rental, not my problem. i would have done that if it was a grizzly bear. why? i can hear my kids answering in unison ... BECAUSE YOU'RE RETARDED DAD! nikonsniper steve
I had a friend that was charged by an Elk on a hiking trail once~ thank God she lived to tell about it! Now, I think I'm speaking for your entire family... and your bloggy friends... DO NOT DO THIS WITH A GRIZZ!! :)
Great shot! Too bad you caught her in the spring, though. They look like hell in the spring, don't they? LOL! Still, she has a beautiful face.
My husband actually had a bull elk run into the side of his car once. Luckily he wasn't going very fast and neither was the elk. He just clicked his antlers against the driver's side window. Scared him a bit, though. My husband and the elk, too, I imagine.

A face anyone could love. I do hope people are clicking on the photos to enlarge them. This one is a beaut.
I hope you're using a zoom lens... he looks a little ticked off! He's beautiful, though.
