Passing On A Torch Of Life

15 My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad;
16 my inmost being will rejoice
when your lips speak what is right.
17 Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
18 There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise,
and keep your heart on the right path.
20 Do not join those who drink too much wine
or gorge themselves on meat,
21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor,
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22 Listen to your father, who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy the truth and do not sell it;
get wisdom, discipline and understanding.
24 The father of a righteous man has great joy;
he who has a wise son delights in him.
25 May your father and mother be glad;
may she who gave you birth rejoice!
26 My son, give me your heart
and let your eyes keep to my ways,
Proverbs 23:15-26 (NIV)

I think if the very first verse came to pass for our children... as parent's we would be pleased. There is a whole lot in those verses.

Thanks for sharing today!

I love this Proverb especially verses 25 May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice! 26 My son, give me your heat and let your eyes keep to my ways,

I am glad you posted this, I sure needed to read this right now.

Blessings,

I'm wondering about that #23...what is your interpretation of that part that says: Buy the truth and do not sell it? Someone had to sell it in the first place right? Why is it OK for that person but not you? What do you think it means to "buy the truth"? I am a bit perplexed by this and thinking about it now. Trying to figure it out.

As I read those verses you posted, Steve, the numbering of the verses struck me - 15 to 26 - also the formative years of our children and what we hope for above all in their lives.

Teri,
Brilliant question. Obviously the verse struck you different than me.
OK, I think you are asking "Why is it OK that someone told me the gospel message and I am supposed to keep it to myself?" Scripture clearly teaches that we are to spread the gospel. I believe that if a person really believes in the message of Jesus (John 14:6) they should be compelled to tell others (Matthew 28:19,20).
I think that is what you are asking ... please correct me if I am wrong.
However, this is the Old Testament before Christ. I read this as "Buy Truth and Don't Sell Out" or "Buy Truth and Keep The Faith" or maybe even more like "Buy Truth and Hold On To It. I guess I don't read it in the same way but maybe I am wrong as to what you are asking.
Gosh it's great to hear from you! Hope all is well out there in the southwest.
God bless. nikonsniper steve
