I don't know what it is, but I have a hard time getting perfect focus shots of birds like this. My goal is to get one this good some day. Really nice!!!

Bull Rhino Scott ... and others,
Here's how I do it! ISO 200, use Shutter Priority or Tv Mode if you have a Canon. I look for super bright windy days to do this. This allows you to kick up the speed to 1/1000th of a sec. Get a bag of bread and periodically toss some bread up to hovering gulls. This will attract hundreds of birds if you are not careful ... and you what that could mean. Anyway, if it's windy they can hover almost motionless overhead. This allows for maximum potental for sharpness. I still want a bright day though in order to kick the speed up. I will fire and hold down for 3 shot bursts. The camera should be set to center-weighted focusing. Don't use Matrix for this stuff. Position yourself with your back to the sun and shoot up at about a 45 degree angle. This will intensify the blue. Of course you have to pan to keep the gull centered. I could say a whole lot more Scott ... but I know you already know most of what I have said. Remember I might shoot hundreds in this situation. I will walk away with 25 that are killer every time. The rest are garbage.
