You and Mike (chase Images) always seem to be in the right place at the right time! Tried to take pictures of some turkeys the other night, but my $100 camera just didn't have enough zoom (both in speed and distance-argh!). How did you even find them- amazing!

well, in order to find these huge fruit bats ... i climbed on a plane and flew 10,000 miles to northern australia to a city called port douglas. in the month of april, there are thousands and thousands of these in trees there. at night they fly incredible distances to fruit orchards. you can imagine the force that they could hit a crop with if they are hungry.
so not all of my photos are just taken out my window on the way to work. ha!

I remember reading somewhere that you take suggestions of places to photograph - in the fall my area is beautiful. The Allegheny National Forest and Griffis Sculpture Park in nearby Ashford Hollow, NY would inspire any photographer. Unfourtunately my guess it's an 11 hour drive.

Australia? Wow! Good for you. I used to think bats were rather creepy, but now i know they are good, especially the ones around here ( Long Island, NY ), as the eat mosquitoes and moths. They really do have sweet little faces.

Nice photo.

vivian,
these are huge! 4-5 feet wing spans. their heads are as big as our rat terrier. these eat fruit. there were thousands right outside our hotel in hundreds of trees.
my wife was totally freeked going down there with me. it was hilarious. i got her to go with me which i considered a major victory.
susan said she really did find them interesting after we left. ha!

Love how you bring the world to us in photos!

Thank you.
