Magnificent trees...and their magnificence can't truly be appreciated until one is dwarfed by them.
I read your comments under "My Nikon Equipment" and "My Photography Guidelines." Thank you for sharing the knowlege you have gained. You are a good teacher...
and I don't have to tell you that you are a great photographer!

the charming beauty of the scene is awesome and sends one in a trance .It reminds me of these lines from Robert Frost poem "Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Evening"
The woods are lovely dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles togo before I sleep
And--------------------I sleep

What amazing trees. The roads look so tiny next to them.

elizabeth,
that's what i thought because the appear to have a reddish tinge in their coloring. people around here seen to know the difference by the time they are 10. i learned they are called sequoias and they truly are the giants of the forest. these were in sequoia national park. i will be posting a few more of these photos to give you another idea of just how big they are. still photos don't quite do them justice. i think if these fall in california ... the top lands in arizona.

The sequoias are redwoods, so your original determination was right even though some locals may have corrected you. (I happen to be married to a forester; he now works in computer graphics and photography, but he knows his trees still.) I think that sequoia is the genus and redwood the subgenus, but I could be wrong. They are somehow related to the cypress family, but I don't know those details well. If someone says that they can tell the difference between sequoia and redwoods, they are likely confused. There are three kinds of redwoods/sequoias, so they may be trying to distinguish the giant sequoias of the Sequoia National Forest and the common redwoods (sequoias) that are also known as coastal redwoods that run up and down Route 1 from Monterey County (my home area) to northern California. They may be . So, it seems like you were not all that far from me.

Anyway, thanks for answering, and if you ever come close to Monterey County, I am a good tour guide, especially for photographers! :)

What a neat photo! I love it.

I like this. I like the sequoia too. The last job I did for a magazine was to draw the sequoia trees. I forget but think only one was in my drawing.

Love the way they saved the tree by winding the road in-between!

I just got a Canon T1i, and it is like crack! I am addicted to it, and shooting pics! I was bad before with my Nikon Coolpix, but now is a different world! I am blown away but what I am able to do with it (or what it is doing with me! LOL).

Steve,

If you are back later this year, let me know in advance. If I am in town, I would love to show you the area a little to the south but driving distance: the Monterey Peninsula, which is beautiful and has been my home for 21 years. My husband is a former professional photograper (as well as former forester), former photography instructor (at a university in Jordan)/has photographed this area in the past in some detail, and is a Nikon user! I think you would get along really well. Just drop a line to elizabeth.mahlou@gmail.com if you can fit us into your schedule. (I live in San Juan Bautista -- you can Google it. I call it San Ignatio on my blog because I had to use pseudonyms in my book, so I retained them on the blog.) It would be so cool to hook up!

elizabeth,
sounds interesting. would love to photograph with a pro that knows the sites to see. keep an eye out for my trip schedule on nikonsniper. i usually announce my intentions a bit in advance and just before i leave on the trip so that people know what to expect.
at the moment i have planned that area for the month of may. would enjoy hearing more about teaching in jordan too.
nikonsniper steve ... drenched in hollywood, ca tonight
